Our Legacy
Dallas Land Co. was founded in 1856 on the banks of the Black Warrior River by Leslie DeVotie and seven close friends he called brothers. From the beginning, they believed land was more than acreage. It was family, future, and faith in the South.
In 1908, a younger Leslie from the DeVotie family line traveled to Chicago to formally train in the modern real estate profession. That period shaped how we still work today: earned trust, transparent representation, and disciplined contracts.
Industry history from the early 1900s reflects that shift. Around 1900, brokerage began taking shape as a formal profession in the United States, and in 1908 the National Association of Real Estate Exchanges was formed. At that time, curbstoner-style brokerage still existed and licensing standards were not yet in place until 1919. In major markets like Chicago, professional agents moved toward trust-based, exclusive listings, and open houses that began in the 1910s later became a core part of real estate sales.
Our family has carried that professional standard across generations since 1908 while honoring roots that go back to 1856. Today, we broker landmark land across the Southeast with the same brotherhood spirit that started on the riverbank.
